Berkut Aircraft - This article is about the American-made engine-driven Geral aircraft. See Sukhoi Su-47 for the Russian Berkut-powered experimental aircraft.

The Berkut 360 is an isometric two-seater canard aircraft constructed primarily of carbon fiber and fiberglass, with thrust controls and retractable landing gear.

The Eagle prototype was designed and built by Dave H. Ronneberg as part of a business partnership between Ronneberg and Donald S. Murphy called Experimental Aviation that lasted from 1989 to 1992.

In 1992, the partnership was dissolved and Exerimtal Aviation Inc. Ronneberg sold the aircraft as a kit, while Murphy wanted to protect the project. The ensuing litigation between the two resulted in bankruptcy for Ronneberg and Murphy as individuals and for Exerimtal Aviation. The book was revived in 1996 by Richard Riley and Raissance Composites, with Ronneberg as a consultant.

In January 2001, under pressure from Ronneberg, Raissance sold the assets to American aerobatic pilot Vicky Cruz.

That company pulled the plane from the market in 2002. Ronneberg continued the project, which is currently focused on the UAV market.

An agreement was reached in 2003 to sell the project to Republic Aerospace, but the deal fell through. Cruse was no longer involved in day-to-day operations, but retained ownership until the aircraft he was flying, a borrowed Zivko Edge 540, crashed in Buckinghamshire, England on 22 August 2009. Su 47 (s 37 Berkut) Golden Eagle Fighter

Derived from the Eagle Rutan Long-EZ, the main differences are the retractable main landing gear, double-skinned and molded sails, struts and wing struts. Like the Long EZ, the Berkut carries two people in a chair. The front seat passenger has access to all instruments and controls. It's usually equipped with a rear passenger seat, side panel, and clutch, but no steering wheel pedals, brakes, or instruments. Aerodynamic changes to the original Long-EZ fairing were made to increase performance and interior space. The fuselage was lengthened and the nose, cockpit, instrument panel and pilot were moved a foot (300 mm) forward to allow for the use of a heavier wing at the rear. The main wing lubo was softened by removing a small bd on the trailing edge of the Long EZ wing. The lower wing was removed and the size increased in chord and span, which greatly increased the roll.

Early Berkuts used wings and canards similar to the Long-EZ and used a very blue 2 lb/cu. ft. The dsity Dow STYROFOAM PI core is shaped with a hot wire foam cutter, but instead of fiberglass, it is cut with a carbon fiber reinforced polymer skin. The fuselage and wings remained fiberglass. Later versions (kits produced after spring 1999) used full carbon fiber fairings and wings with a maximum thickness of 5 l/cubic. 1/4" thick PVC or SAN foam core, only small fairways and end faces need to be cut from the foam. Berkut uses Roncz 1145MS canard fairing, which is more resistant to insects and rain contamination than GU 25-5. (11) First with 8 air feeds used in Long-EZ.

Berkut used a retractable main (rear) landing gear designed by Shirl Dickey for the home-built E-Racer. At first, Berkut used gear parts manufactured by Dickey, but over time they were redesigned and improved. Later sets had internally manufactured gear parts. Like the Vari-Eze and Long EZ before it, the Berkut is clipped to the nose gear and retracts to prevent the aircraft from rolling back when parked without a pilot in the front seat. Some early Berkuts used a hydraulic nose gear system, but most used an electromechanical thruster. With the electric system, the pilot and passenger can climb into the cockpit, extend the nose gear, and lift the plane with the passenger inside.

Originally designed for the Lycoming O-235 108-118hp engine, the Long-EZ was closer to the Berkut, while the latter was designed for the larger Lycoming IO-360 180hp engine. The aircraft was later modified with another giant mount, fairings and battery layout to accept the 260 hp Lycoming IO-540, the choice of most builders. Some with the O-540 have been reported to reach speeds of 300 mph in level flight.

Regardless of the cause, Berkut's overall safety record is poor, with at least 6 of the 31 aircraft built having been involved in catastrophic accidents or incidents. The manufacturer or someone associated with the manufacturer explained it this way:

"In the early years there were a few crashes due to installation errors, so it was decided to start selling the finished product (or with help in the final build). There were also a few crashes due to pilot errors. But never due to defects in the aircraft or design. there's been an accident."

The original prototype crashed by Rick Fessd at an air show in Santa Paula, California on August 12, 1995. A 360-degree, very high spin - caused the aircraft to crash, a review of the aircraft's video footage showed that the pilot had pitched below 9g+. . Fess was killed.

The first Eagle 540 built by Dan Gray crashed on June 9, 1996 in Santa Paula, California. Gray started and ended his first flight at nearby Camarillo Airport, but chose to return to Santa Paula on his second flight. The last time the bike stopped and was about to sit on a nearby freeway, it collided head-on with a Honda station wagon. The plane was badly damaged, but Gray was only bruised. This aircraft was built by Michael Kashan and served as the company's flagship for several years. On July 1, 2000, it encountered a dust storm on the final approach to Jackpot, Nevada, flown by another pilot. This caused the aircraft to reverse and slide down the runway. Both wings were broken, the starboard spar and spar were split between the sail and d span, the main gear was torn off and the nose smashed against the instrument panel. The leg of the plane was broken, but only the head of the passenger was cut off. The plane has been rebuilt and is flying again.

Then, the plane overshot the runway at First Flight Airport and tore off its gear legs. No injuries were reported in the accident.

Berkut Aircraft

Built by Steve Drybread. On May 23, 2002, during a test flight near Anderson, Indiana, Drybread removed the main bolts for the canards. The canard and the dry bread were killed in flight.

Built by Steve Drybread. The CB540, flown by owner Charles Brack, crashed into a power line near Lapeer, Michigan on June 19, 2004. The plane was destroyed, the nose returned to the pilot's seat. Brack's leg was broken.

Built by Jerrold S. Jorritsma. The test plane's engine failed after takeoff, the pilot was unable to return to the runway and had to land off the runway. This landing caused significant damage to the aircraft's sails and wings.
