Best Ultralight Aircraft - At the Aero Friedrichshafen European air show in April, visitors saw many fast designs already flying in Europe. These are pure new creations that can reach 200 mph with 100 horsepower, at a fraction of the cost of the most expensive general aviation aircraft.
These appear to be Light-Sport aircraft and, in some countries, they may be. The FAA currently prohibits either retractable equipment (except on airplanes) or adjustable flight equipment on LSAs. Double boosting is necessary if these engines are to achieve their speed potential.

The Light Aircraft Manufacturers Association (LAMA), the organization for the light aircraft manufacturing industry, approached the FAA requesting several changes. Executives and policy writers listened carefully and considered these requests. Likewise, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) sought changes that would benefit the bag industry and home builders.

These two strategic approaches coincide with the FAA's willingness to provide new opportunities in the near future. A revised regulation is working its way through the development and approval process and could open the door to the new designs discussed here.
Today, the United States is full of "professional repair centers" or "repair service centers." The concept means that a person who knows the kit well can help the home builder achieve his 51% effort in the work to qualify as an Experimental Amateur Built (EAB). The FAA already allows this, and almost everyone agrees that enforcement results in better airplanes.
Because the EAB kit can operate in an IFR system (assuming the pilot is qualified and the aircraft meets a simple checklist of onboard equipment), and because the FAA does not establish speed limits or air conditioning on EAB aircraft, these European aircraft are gone. the candidate importer is willing to bring and help in the construction.
New regulations are currently being developed for next year to expand this concept of a professional builder center. It is not yet clear what form this may take, but it is still being investigated.

With current and future possibilities, let's take a quick look at four designs that warrant a closer look.
A Swedish success story in light aircraft, the Blackwing made its debut at Aero 2015 and its sleek design attracted a lot of attention.
Blackwing presented its retractable gear model - called 635RG - at this year's Aero because the regulations in most European countries have no speed limit and the -no ban on reversible equipment when working as European ultralights. Many companies in the same space as LSA are pushing the speed as the first sales of quality and repeatable models are among them.
Blackwing has a maximum speed of 75% at 150 knots and does not exceed a speed of 190 knots, but the stall is only 35 knots, which makes the plane very bearable for most pilots. These impressive speeds were achieved by the 100 horsepower Rotax 912, but in Aero the 635 model featured the 140 horsepower 915iS engine from Rotax. Take care, Cirrus!

JMB Aircraft, run by two Belgian brothers, is the manufacturer of the VL3, an aircraft designed by Vanessa Air and previously manufactured by Aveko.
Some Americans already know this plane, even though it is from Aveko and not JMB. This is the one off Gobosh model that was refurbished and sold in the USA with arms and winglets. In 2007, the Belgian brothers were the top sellers of Aveko aircraft and eventually accounted for 85% of the manufacturer's sales. In 2012 they acquired Aveko and in 2015 they took over the production.
In recent years, JMB has done well. The company now employs 100 people in the Czech Republic, with another 50 in Belgium.
Together, the team built, sold and delivered 320 VL3 aircraft, mainly in Europe, with a few in other countries (two in the US registered under the Aveko brand). In 2018, JMB built 50 planes. Company officials said they plan to build 5.5 per month for 2019, or 66 planes.
Year Old Pilot Sets Record For Solo Flight Around World
Bristell boasts a well-crafted interior with a 51.2″ cockpit that delivers on the class it doesn't let go of. Bristell leads the way in aviation due to its good design and experience. The junctions such as the fuselage with the wings are smooth and this design method is used throughout the aircraft.
The empty weight can be 729 pounds, which gives a load of 400 pounds even with a full fuel of 32 gallons. Due to the large fuel supply, the range is 700 nautical miles based on an endurance of more than six hours. The 100 hp Rotax 912 burns just five gallons an hour even at high speed. Cargo capacity is important as Bristell can carry cargo in two wing trays together in the space behind the seats (subject to other weight and balance calculations, of course).
In flight, Bristell is a thing of beauty with superb handling and an unbeatable stability profile. Stall is 32 knots or 39 clean and "max structural cruise" is listed at 116 knots or 133 mph (fixed gear model). Bristell RG travels at 134 knots and does not exceed the speed of 155 knots.
The Czech manufacturer produces models of tricycles, taildraggers and RG models with retractable gears. Bristell is represented in America by Bristell USA, who had a solid 2018, delivering around 20 of their Light-Sport deluxe aircraft.

Many of these fast designs have side-by-side seats that many pilots prefer. However, seeking maximum efficiency, Tarragon chose a tandem, but achieved this with a very finished design similar to many European designs.
Power is provided by a Rotax 912 or turbocharged 914 engine. With only 100 horsepower, Tarragon - the name of the company and the aircraft - reports that the speed of 150- 155 knots and the list speed not exceeding 200 knots. Tarragon shows a speed of 36 knots with full flaps.
Tarragon also follows others in the extensive use of computer-aided design and carbon fiber materials. This is the first flight I have covered originating from Latvia.
Unlike the golden age of aviation in the mid-20th century, almost all modern designs from Europe, America, or elsewhere employ the latest design techniques and use powerful computer technology.

Even a small company with a dozen or two employees can use techniques not available to Boeing in the 1970s or 1980s. The aircraft meets current industry regulations or standards.
It looks like it's only a matter of time before some of these models make their way to US airports, thanks to the mid-range revolution.

Light sport aircraft (LSA) can be flown with a sport pilot certificate instead of a special pilot certificate. Because of the difference in certification, you can become a light sport pilot in half the time and spend half the money on training. Many sport pilots choose to buy light sport aircraft. Learn about LSA ownership before you buy. Although there are many S-LSAs (manufacturer built) and E-LSAs (experimental) on the market, here are a few.

When choosing a light sport aircraft, keep in mind how you will best use the aircraft. The type of engine, the required load and the amount of fuel are important factors to consider before buying. You must also consider how the aircraft is maintained, including the availability of parts, and how long it will last through heavy use. The best option for one purpose may not be suitable for another.
The Czech Republic-built LSA aircraft, the Evektor Harmony, is available in three engine configurations. The rust-free design is great for pilots who don't frequent the hangar or take to the skies. The Harmony is also available in a full IFR version ideal for instrument rating pilots.

The JackRabbit is the pilot's favorite ultra-portable micro eBike: 24 lbs, 20 mph and as thin as 7 inches wide means it fits into any plane. The perfect way to travel to and from your FBO. No convention required.
The Italian-made Tecnam P92 Echo MkII is lighter and more fuel efficient than Technam's other aircraft. It is available in two designs and comes at an affordable price. The relatively new aircraft is considered an affordable option in the LSA market due to its sleek design and attention to detail.
The Tomark Aero Viper is a two-seat, all-metal LSA designed specifically for recreational flying. For the LSA, the interior is very spacious and includes an LCD control and communication system. The relatively low price for both new and used models makes the Viper one of the best choices for pilots on a budget.
